ASTM A615 Standard Rebar Sizes for Concrete Slabs
In the United States, steel reinforcing bar (rebar) size numbers represent the diameter in eighths of an inch. For residential flatwork, selecting the correct bar diameter ensures proper tensile load transfer without creating aggregate voids during placement:
| Bar Size | Diameter | Unit Weight | Typical Application | Min Lap Splice (30d) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #3 | 0.375" (3/8") | 0.376 lb/ft | Sidewalks, pool copings, decorative flatwork | 12.0 inches |
| #4 (Standard) | 0.500" (1/2") | 0.668 lb/ft | Residential patios, driveways, garages, hot tubs | 15.0 inches |
| #5 | 0.625" (5/8") | 1.043 lb/ft | Commercial slabs, heavy equipment pads, commercial driveways | 18.75 inches |
How to Determine Rebar Grid Spacing (12" vs 18" vs 24")
18-Inch On-Center (Standard)
Recommended by ACI 302.1R for 4" to 5" residential concrete slabs including backyard patios, shed pads, and walkways. Provides balanced crack restraint against thermal expansion and ground drying.
12-Inch On-Center (Heavy Duty)
Mandatory for hot tub pads (supporting 400+ lbs/sq ft), garage floors housing full-size trucks, or driveway approaches. Higher steel density resists severe localized point loading and punch-through.
24-Inch On-Center (Light Duty)
Acceptable for pedestrian walkways and non-structural pads where subgrade soil is well-compacted and frost heave risk is low. Do not use 24" spacing for vehicular traffic.
3 Critical Job-Site Rules for Rebar Placement
Never Let Rebar Touch the Ground (Use Chairs)
Rebar lying on the subbase dirt or gravel provides zero tensile reinforcement and will corrode as moisture seeps from the ground. Always support bars on plastic rebar chairs or 2-inch concrete dobies spaced every 2 to 2.5 feet in both directions.
Maintain 3 Inches of Edge Clearance
Per ACI 318 Section 20.6, reinforcing steel exposed to earth or weather requires a minimum of 2 to 3 inches of concrete cover. Keep bars 3 inches back from the perimeter form boards so moisture cannot penetrate and cause spalling rust cracks.
Secure Intersections with 16-Gauge Tie Wire
Tie every second or third intersection using 16-gauge annealed wire in a snap or figure-eight tie. This prevents the rebar grid from displacing when laborers walk across it during the pour or when heavy ready-mix chutes discharge.
Frequently Asked Questions About Slab Reinforcement
What size rebar is standard for a 4-inch concrete slab?
#4 rebar (1/2-inch diameter) arranged in an 18-inch by 18-inch square grid is the standard specification for residential 4-inch slabs, patios, and driveways.
How much rebar overlap is required for splices?
ACI 318 mandates a minimum lap splice of 30 bar diameters (15 inches for #4 bar). When tying two 20-foot sticks end-to-end, overlap them by at least 15 inches and secure with two wire ties.
Can I use wire mesh instead of rebar?
Yes, welded wire reinforcement (WWF 6x6-W1.4/W1.4) can be used for non-vehicular residential slabs like walkways and small patios. However, it must be supported on chairs; simply "pulling up the mesh" with a hook during the pour is unreliable and prohibited under ACI quality standards.
